Name: Yuri Ruley
Band: MxPx
What’s your story for being in a band? How did you come to have a career in music?
I had some friends in junior high that played in bands. Through their encouragement and my parent’s willingness to open up their checkbook, I started playing the drums. I credit having a career as a musician to the dedication and hard work of the three band members and a few lucky breaks along the way.
Were there any obstacles you had to overcome to be where you are today?
Oh, just a few. I would have to say the biggest obstacle we’ve faced through the years would be people’s perceptions of who we are and what we stand for. We’ve been loved and hated for the very same reasons for our entire existence.
Why are you in a band? What keeps you doing what you do day in and day out?
I joined MxPx because I had dreams of being a rock star, but also (and more importantly) because it was fun and rewarding. I continue to do it because I love playing the drums…and because of the money.
What do you love about music?
I just love the whole creative process of making music. It can be difficult at times but it’s always worth it in the end.
What are some of your passions in this life? What are things that you love and care about in this world?
I love music, I love family, I love being a positive force in people’s lives.
Have you come in contact or been affected by any groups or charities that you’ve seen doing amazing work?
There is a non-profit organization in my neck of the woods of Washington State that I volunteer at when I have time, called Children Of The Nations. They work with orphans in several countries in Africa and also in the Dominican Republic. It’s incredible to see what can happen when one person has an idea and the drive to get things done.
Have you been involved in any charities?
Like I was saying above, C.O.T.N. I plan to do more with them in the future beyond stuffing envelopes. I want to spend some time with them in Africa helping them out any way I can.
What are some of the biggest needs that you see in this world? If you had to pick an area of life to change where would you start?
One thing I’ve noticed during my travels is that pretty much down to the core people are all the same, no matter where they live or what they believe in. I just wish we could be a little more tolerant to the religious and cultural differences of the people we share this planet with. It’ll never happen, but that would be my thing to change.
